It’s 2013 beeeyatch! *starts a booty shakin’ dance that rivals Beyonce*
I don’t know what it is, but I just love me a fresh start to a new year. The fact that SO much could happen in the next 12 months just gets me so freakin’ jacked to kick off lucky number ’13!
So to get this party started here are 13 badass skincare resolutions that will help transform your skin from ‘meh’ to ‘daaaayum’ this year.
#13 – Slather After You Lather
When the mercury drops, our skin can dry out, crack, peel, become itchy or even bleed. Not pretty.
Fortunately, you can avoid this all together by simply slathering on a quality moisturizer or even making your own moisturizer that will help to lock in the moisture and hydrate your skin throughout the day.
It may seem like common sense to those of us who consider ourselves skincare pros but you would be surprised how many guys and gals don’t slather on the moisturizer after lathering up in the shower.
If you can resolve to incorporating this into your daily skincare routine, you should notice that scaly skin fading away in no time.
#12 – Take It Off Baby
Not going to lie, that title makes me think of the time I was at a male strippers while in university and….actually….nevermind.
What I really mean with this misleading little title is – we ladies need to get in the habit of taking off our makeup each and every night before we go to bed.
Now trust me, I know the feeling of just wanting to crash out because you’re exhausted after a long day but taking off your makeup before sleepy time is uber-important.
Not only does it clear your pores of any lingering dirt, bacteria, and makeup but it also saves your pillow from accumulating unnecessary dirt and oil that transfers from our face to our pillow as we sleep. And you know what else it saves? Your face. From getting pimples.
Point proven. Let’s move on.
#11 – Shower Post-Sweat
How many of us actually shower right after a workout? More specifically, how many of you shower at the gym immediately following your sweat sesh? I have to admit, I don’t.
I know, I know, it’s bad. But luckily it’s a new year so I get to resolve to change up that nasty little habit of mine.
In fact, we should all aim to shower within at least 30 minutes of our workout ending. If for some reason you just can’t seem to make that happen then at least stock up on some wet wipes that pack a salicylic acid punch so that you can clear away any dirt, oil, sweat, and bacteria build up in your pores and then change into dry, fresh clothes.
And then go home and shower, will ya?
#10 – Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself
I’m including this one specifically because I’m so terrible at it.
It is crucial that each year you get a doctor or dermatologist to thoroughly check your skin for unusual moles, even if you routinely check for them yourself.
These qualified professionals look in more nooks and crannies of your skin than you ever could which could mean the difference between early detection and a serious situation.
Don’t keep putting it off, make that appointment. Now.
#9 – Don’t Hate, Exfoliate!
Did you know that it takes an adult 28 days for their body to fully replenish and regenerate all new skin cells? That means your skin has a full 28 days to dry out, flake off, lose it’s lustre and to look dull and ‘bleh’!
That is if you don’t exfoliate.
You see, when we exfoliate we are helping to rid our skin of the dry, dead skin cells that are blocking our newer, fresher, younger looking skin cells from coming to the surface and giving us that radiant look.
That means, if you can work in a good full body exfoliation (including your face) twice a week, you are helping your skin to look and feel younger. And the best part? You can make your own full body exfoliating treatment with as little as 2 ingredients!
#8 – Gettin’ Handsy
Let’s be honest, some of us can be really hard on our hands treating them more like tools than appendages. From tearing open boxes with our nails to dunking our hands into sinks full of drying soaps or slathering them with antibacterial serums – sometimes we forget that our phalanges need some TLC too.
To fix up your fingers this year ditch the drying antibacterial gels and opt for a more moisturizing option such as Purell with Lubriderm. That way you zap the germs but not your skin’s moisture.
#7 – Butt Out
It’s no secret that smoking is terrible for your health and since your skin is your biggest organ it only makes sense that after puffing countless packs, those toxins are going to show up on your face.

#6 – Hands Off!
One of the hardest skincare habits I have ever tried to break is to stop touching my face. I do it so much that sometimes I don’t even notice I’m doing it…until a new pimple pops up and I’m wondering how the hell that happened.
So this year I’m calling on all my fellow skincare sistahs who also rest their chin on their hand, tug at their skin, rub their eyes, or just simply touch their face more than 3 times a day to stop. Stop it now. Stop it tomorrow. Stop it for 2013 and you will notice that not only does your skin appear more clear but any premature signs of aging should fade away – without having to coat on expensive creams, lotions and potions to do the job for you.
#5 – Embrace Your Inner DIY’in Diva
If you have been around these parts long enough you know that I l.o.v.e DIY’ing my own skincare products. The fact that I can control what goes into my products just makes my little control-freak self so happy!
Not only can you decide what goes into your skincare treatments but you can save yourself some serious coin by doing so. Besides, why smear synthetic chemicals all over your face if you don’t have to?
#4 – Green Your Skincare Routine
Similar to getting your DIY on, using wholesome and natural ingredients on your face and body is just about the best thing you can do for the health of your skin.
From skin scrubs to body butter, facial cleansers to moisturizers, acne treatments and even skin lightening solutions – when you add a little green to your skincare routine, you are harnessing the raw potent power of Mother Nature. And trust me, that woman knows how to make a mean skincare treatment.
#3 – Get Some Z’s
It’s not called beauty sleep for nothing!
When we don’t get adequate amounts of sleep, our skin shows it by looking tired, drained, and dull. In addition to that, when we lose out on sleep our cortisol level increase causing us to feel stressed. And guess where that shows up – your face.
Moral of the story? Count sheep, listen to yawn-inducing talk radio, or take a small amount of Melatonin and catch yourself some z’s. Your skin will thank you for it.
#2 – Drink Water
Drink water. Drink lots of it. Reap the skin-hydrating benefits. Enough said.
#1 – Make SPF Your New Bff
This one had to be saved for numero uno because, well, it’s just so damn important!
In fact, unprotected sun exposure is the biggest contributor to early signs of aging including sun spots, leathery looking skin, and premature wrinkles and yet, it is one of the easiest things to prevent.
So how does one protect their skin against these unsightly signals of aging? Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen or use a moisturizer that contains SPF.
Even if you are don’t plan on being outside for long, it is imperative that you slap on the SPF as incidental sun exposure makes up over 80% of our sun exposure throughout our lives. Yeah, 80-freakin-percent! If that little fact isn’t worthy of a new year’s resolution, I don’t know what is!
