Your skin changes quite a bit as you age. Besides the obvious – wrinkles, sagging, etc – there are several changes that take place at a more cellular level and affect your skins appearance. On top of that, the products you use have different results on your skin as you age. The products you use in your 20’s are likely not the ones you should be using in your 30’s, 40’s and beyond.
So where the heck am I going with all this? Well, I’m going to be giving you a few pointers to ensure you take the best care possible of your skin throughout the years. Part of that is identifying what you need to target with age. So let’s get into it.
Skin Care Routine Through The Ages
Since your skin changes so much through the years, let me help you give your skin enough TLC to look like the MILF we all know are you!
Age: Terrific 20’s
Aww yes, us damn 20 somethings are so annoying to watch. We tan incessantly, we smoke, we drink, we stay up late and yet we still look young.
Well, most of us anyways.
As a 20 something myself, I am keenly aware of the damage I can cause to my future skin by my current behavior. That being said, I don’t always heed my own warnings.
One of the first signs it’s time to swap up your skin care routine in your 20’s is when you start seeing skin discoloration from all that unprotected sun exposure.
The fix is quick; wear sunscreen. Everyday. It’s that simple. And trust me, your future self will thank you.
Another common skin-pas we commit is not getting enough sleep and eating too much junk. Sadly, the current 20 something generation was raised on fast foods. Those golden arches were like a beacon of hope in our youth. As we ll know, bad habits are hard to break, but let’s give it a try, shall we!
While you attempt to kick your Big Mac binges, try adding a gentle foam cleanser to your daily skin care routine. It will remove your makeup, but won’t suck your skin dry.
For those of you suffering from early adult acne, choose a product containing alpha and beta hydroxy acids. This will help prevent your skin from building up a layer of dead skin cells.
Top off your cleanser and acne treatment with a daily moisturizer containing SPF for UVA/UVB protection and you won’t regret it.
Age: Dirty 30’s
If you are in your dirty 30’s like V, then it’s time to really take care of your natural collagen and elastin fibers. It’s during this decade that your body slows down on the production of the essential nutrients needed to keep your skin tight and young.
So how do we keep it tight?
The best way to give your collagen and elastin a helping hand is to add regular exfoliation to your routine and avoid using products containing harsh chemicals. Choose products with 100% natural ingredients.
Age: Fab 40’s
There are an awful lot of celebrities making the 40+ year ranges look pretty darn fabulous. So what’s their secret?
It’s not as pretty as Victoria’s Secret, but here it is: they balance their hormones.
Once women hit their 40’s, their estrogen levels begin to drop, taking the first ginger steps towards menzies. This dip in the lady hormone naturally causes wrinkles to become more pronounced because it dries out your skin.
So what is a lady to do?
In an effort to avoid full blown adult acne and more wrinkles, start using moisturizer with collagen-building properties like peptides, antioxidants and essential fatty acids. Also considering eating foods with higher levels of phytoestrogens to replace the natural estrogen you are losing.
Age: Fantastic 50’s and Beyond
It wasn’t but a few years ago that I thought being 50 was ancient, alas I have changed my tune.
Let’s be real for a moment here, there are hoards of gorgeous 50+ year old women. Umm, Julianne Moore, Michelle Pfeifer, Helen Mirren, Doctor Quinn Medicine Women. Need I go on?
While all these ladies seem to have beat sagging, sullen skin, the vast majority of us will likely be on the look out for high quality products that contain anti aging ingredients.
And what are these ingredients to look out for? Grab a product that includes peptides, retinoid, alpha hydroxyl and amino acids. These powerful ingredients will help reduce the appearance of skin damage you may have caused when you were younger.
Whether your 22, 52 or beyond, using the appropriate products for your skin will ensure you look younger for longer. While I truly believe laugh lines are beautiful, crow’s feet can suck it.
