It seems that the word ‘acne’ these days is synonymous to one product – Proactiv Solution, which currently doesn’t even crack the top 5 in our top acne treatment choices.
Although it’s recognised worldwide, how does this famous acne solution size up to its competitors?
Let’s find out in this our official Proactiv review.
What Is It?
Proactiv is a complete acne management system, much the same as Zenmed Acne Solution it combines the use of a 3 step process which are:
Instead of using a basic cleanser to clear dead skin and dirt, Proactiv was one of the first companies to use an antibacterial as apart of the formula. Nowadays this is generally standard procedure with all brands of cleansers as having an antibacterial ingredient(in this case benzoyl peroxide) helps remove any acne causing bacteria known as Propionibacterium(P-Acne).
The next step is to use the toner to help remove any excess oil and dirt, plus clear away the cleanser and allow the pores to open up for the introduction of the final application…
Of course applying the majority of the ingredients in steps 1 and 2 will normally result in some negative effects including dry skin and inflammation. Applying a moisturizer to repair dry skin, will prevent it from shedding and potentially causing future blockages, the second of the BIG 3 causes of acne.
As you probably already know, Proactiv Solution has been around now for a while. In fact it was the first of its kind to be released to the public and was rewarded as becoming the top acne treatment, which it held onto for many years.
Here’s a few reasons why.
Why It’s Hot!
“Hot” is probably the wrong word, but there’s a few good things about Proactiv worth mentioning:
- It’s Cheap
At $30 for a one month supply, it’s definitely one of the least expensive acne treatments available on the market.
- It Does The Job…Mostly
If you are only suffering from mild to moderate acne, then Proactiv should offer you some results. It definitely wasn’t designed for severe acne sufferers, but for those who tend to have the occasional outbreak, it should help to keep your skin under control a little better than usual.
- Side Effects Are Limited
Because the solution isn’t extremely powerful, it’s unlikely you’ll have any issues in regards to redness or irritation, therefore it’s safe to use for those with sensitive skin.
Like any form of treatment, Proactiv also has its disadvantages.
Why It’s Not!
Here’s a couple of reasons why Proactiv has fallen behind the curb a little when it comes to acne technology today:
- It Ain’t Effective On Everybody
Just like Clear Skin Max, Proactiv is another one of those products that doesn’t take into consideration skin type and levels of acne severity. Basically what you see is what you get and therefore it’s almost impossible to state that it will be effective for everyone who tries it.
- Some People Have Seen Opposite Effects
It’s not uncommon for someone to suffer a breakout immediately after using a treatment for the first time, but in the case of Proactiv there have been many people who have written in complaining about consistent breakouts worse then the ones they were getting prior to use. This relates to the first problem with this product in that it doesn’t factor in different skin types, which ultimately could lead to something like this occurring.
- It’s Just Isn’t Powerful Enough
You’ll notice this immediately after the first application. Normally if you were to apply the use of a more powerful treatment, it would be obvious that it had an effect by checking how clean your pores are after use. Proactiv just doesn’t seem to cleanse deep enough to remove blockages and allow for the healing process to take place properly in the final step.
Okay enough said, here’s our overall verdict on Proactiv Solution.
Proactiv has been around for a long time and during its many years at the top of the acne treatment world, it had a lot of happy customers.
The problem is, they haven’t undated their formula to help it compete against the likes of Zenmed Acne Solutions or many of the other newly developed home kits.
The truth is, their formula just isn’t that powerful and will only really help those with mild forms of acne, making it in our minds an incomplete acne solution.
