We recently had someone write in asking for advice on how to resolve some of the problems related to the fragile skin around her eyes, plus she said she has fairly sensitive skin.
She also mentioned one specific product she tried out in the past after being recommended to do so by a close friend and after several applications, seemed to cause further irritation.
What was the product she mentioned?
Today we thought we’d publish an official review and give our opinion as to why a product like this might not be good for those girls with sensitive skin.
Time now to kick off this, our official Obagi ELASTIderm review.
Obagi are one of those brands that for a lot of women, once they start using their products, become immediately hooked and usually start turning to them to resolve all their skin care needs.
One of these needs comes in the form of under eye issues and as a result, they came out with their solution to this problem – ELASTIderm.
There are two types of products that use this formula, an eye cream and a gel. No one has commented on which one works better, so it probably just comes down to personal preference.
Like most products, there’s a couple of things that set Obagi ELASTIderm aside from its competitors:
1. Bi Mineral Complex
There isn’t a lot of information on what all the minerals are, as they literally only mention two – zinc and copper. As far as skin care benefits go with these two minerals, copper works by binding to these tiny protein fragments called peptides which are used to help in the production of new skin cells.
Zinc is mostly used as a repairing elements, helping to bring down inflammation and giving a bit of a soothing feeling after application.
2. Malonic Acid
This isn’t a very common ingredient used in other eye creams, but its main purpose is to help stimulate the production of new skin cells.
It also has a direct influence on the production of collagen and elastin, compounds that essentially leads to an increase in skin density and elasticity.
3. Blueberry Extract
Recent studies are suggesting that blueberries have the ability to fight off free radicals, which would normally result in the speeding up of the deterioration of healthy cells.
It basically has the ability to protect cells from harmful external compounds that would normally result in the breakdown and destruction of healthy cells.
4. Penetrating Therapeutics
This is their own formula which they use in a number of their products. We couldn’t find any information on what exactly it is apart from this “helps stimulate and revive the snap and resilient strength of your skin.”, whatever that means.
If we were to guess, it would just be a complex of moisturizing agents, but we could be wrong. If anyone has any information on this, we’d love you hear your comments?
There’s a couple of things we liked about their formula.
Why It’s HOT!
First off, Obagi is a really well respected brand and they always do a good job as far as results go, especially in terms of anti wrinkle products.
After taking a quick look at ELASTIderm’s formula, it’s obvious to tell they have focused most of their efforts on producing a product that targets the production of new cells to help counteract the aging process that can lead to fine lines and wrinkles.
We like this kinda attitude as it means they’re thinking more about actually fixing the problem as opposed to just masking it.
In saying that, this formula is certainly missing a lot!
Why It’s NOT!
Starting with the major point mentioned in the title of this article, this cream contains powerful ingredients that weren’t meant for our skin.
Malonic acid, although can be effective in the production of new healthy skin cells, is derived from a complex chemical process. Although it can exist naturally in beetroot, no studies have been conducted to determine if it has any negative effects on our skin.
If you are the kinda gal who reacts poorly to cosmetics, then Obagi ELASTIderm may cause your skin some problems, usually in the form of redness and irritation.
Secondly as far as an eye cream goes, there is nothing in their formula to suggest it will have any impact whatsover on dark circles and puffy eyes.
Unlike products like Elite Serum or Vivexin, this formula only contains ingredient to help support new cell growth, however it doesn’t deal with the rupturing of the fine capillaries below your eyes, which are the common cause of puffiness and dark circles.
If you are suffering from this type of problem, then you may need to start thinking about some alternatives.
We actually really like the majority of Obagi’s line of products.
They generally do a great job as far as anti wrinkle results go, however due to the fact that this is a kind of speciality of theirs, they haven’t done the most amazing job when it comes to treating other issues, especially below the eyes.
They also use really powerful ingredients, so if you know your skin doesn’t cope well with strong cosmetic chemicals, ELASTIderm might not be the best option for you.
As of now, Obagi ELASTIderm falls behind Elite Serum and is our current #2 eye cream. Thanks to its ability to reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as help increase overall lift and elasticity it comes in at a close second.
