How To Get Rid of Wrinkles Under Your EyesDark under eye circles in your younger years are expected. Late nights, poor food choices and allergies all play a part, but what about under eye wrinkles?

Yes, we’ve all heard about crow’s feet. Those darling little wrinkles that begin to form from too much smiling (we hope!) and the general wear and tear of using our eyes on a regular basis often start cropping up in our 20’s. Just because nature says it’s time to wrinkle, doesn’t mean we have to go with it.

So what are some tips on how to get rid of wrinkles under your eyes or perhaps even wrinkles around your mouth?

Well, inevitably I’m going to end up giving in and using a high quality under eye serum to help rid me of those wrinkles, but for now I’m going au naturale. Would you expect anything less of me?

Why Do We Get Under Eye Wrinkles?

When I think of wrinkles, I often associate them with being caused by age. Age, however, is not the only factor here.

Under eye wrinkles can be caused by a whole host of reasons. Squinting, smiling, smoking, sun damage, acne and muscle movement all play a part.

For example, I get a bit of a lazy right eye when I smile and can see a few more defined crow’s feet on the one side. Sexy, right?

Another sexy fact? Our skin is made up of 3 layers:

The epidermis – outermost layer of skin

The dermis – your middle layer

The subcutaneous – the innermost layering of skin.

In our youth, our skin is great at retaining moisture so our skin stretches and pulls back easier. The dermis contains fibers called elastin that keep us looking youthful and of course, the protein collagen keeps everything nice and tight.

As time passes and we’re a little more taxing on our skin, the elastin and collagen breakdown and our epidermis has a harder time locking in moisture. The fat in our subcutaneous layering also starts to disappear and this all causes the formation of under eye wrinkles.

So how do we slow this process down? Let’s find out!

How To Get Rid of Wrinkles Under Your Eyes

As I said before, I like to challenge nature before opting for a helpful store bought product. If you want to go au naturale first, here are 10 amazingly simple home remedies and tips on how to get rid of wrinkles under your eyes.

#1 Don’t over wash your face

It sounds simple, but a lot of people accidentally over-wash their face or wash it with harsh, drying substances. Tap water alone can strip your skin of its natural moisture barrier and these oils are essential to maintaining youthful looking eyes.

#2 Make sure to moisturize

I hate the “M” word, but here goes…Moist (isn’t that a creepy word? Or is it just me?) skin is radiant skin.

Fine lines and under eye wrinkles are much less noticeable on moisturized skin, but be sure to use something gentle around your eye area. If you’re looking for some green skin care creams, try this one.

#3 DIY some dermabrasion

Dermabrasion involve sloughing away all those dead skin cells that are tarting up your appearance.

To bring new, younger skin to the surface mix together 1 part baking soda with 3 parts water and very gentlly rub around your wrinkles. Quite possibly the easiest and cheapest DIY we’ve ever come up with!

However, if you’re looking for real results, you can’t beat the Microderm MD. V is obsessed with it and swears by the results it gave her.

#4 Load up on Vitamin C

Vitamin C has been found to increase collagen production and protect your skin against sun damage.

Topically applying vitamin C can also help any hyperpigmentation that may be causing your peepers to look a little worn down.

Try mixing the juice from one freshly squeezed lemon or orange with 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Leave this paste around your eyes for 5 minutes then rinse off.

Be careful not to get the juice in your eyes though. Ouch!

#5 Use an alpha hydroxy acid rich face mask

AHA’s come from the acid in fruits and lift away dead skin. In higher concentrates, they can even increase your collagen production.

For a simple face mask, mash up one fresh tomato and add in 2 tablespoons of raw sugar. Let the sugar dissolve in the tomato pulp before adding in 1 tablespoon of honey and slathering all over your face.

After 15 minutes of absorption, rinse off and enjoy smoother, moisturized skin.

#6 Eat your fruits and veggies

Fruits and veggies are Mother Nature’s gift to us and we really should be more thankful. The antioxidants found in these foods help protect your under eyes and all over skin from free radical damage.

They can also help protect your skin against the effects of photoaging.

#7 Fill up on fatty acids

Specifically your Omega 3’s. Omega 3’s are found in cold water fish like salmon, and provide your body with much needed protein and Omega 3 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids keep your skin firm and plump.

#8 Trade in your coffee for cocoa

Doesn’t sound like a hard sell to me! Cocoa contains high levels of dietary flavanols that protect skin from sun damage, improve circulation and hold in hydration. Your skin will not only look smoother, it will feel softer too.

#9 Be sun smart

We should know by now that the sun causes a lot of skin damage. If you want to get rid of under eye wrinkles then you better start avoiding the sun and always be applying a SPF.

#10 Kick the habit

Smoking, that is. More and more studies are linking smoking to skin damage.

The chemicals found in those dirty little butts cause your body to release an enzyme that breaks down your collagen and elastin.

I know I said 10 ways for how to get rid of wrinkles under your eyes, but here’s a bonus one: Catch some zzz’s!

Sleeping is vacation for our body. When we don’t get enough of it our body begins to produce more cortisol (the stress hormone) and this breaks down our skin cells.

Catch a few more zzz’s and you’ll produce more human growth hormone (HGH) which will help keep your skin thicker and less likely to wrinkle.

So there you have it! 11 natural and simple tips on how to get rid of wrinkles under your eyes before they even begin.

  • Hi Sabrina,

Love the article and especially the cocoa trade for coffee. I’m constantly trying to get people in the office to leave the coffee pot to one-side given how much it dehydrates our skin and thus the aging effect it can have. But I never realised the added benefits of cocoa so maybe I may have more success getting them to swap, although we may have a few people falling asleep :)

We are great advocates of facial exercises and machines for a natural aid to stop facial aging, they are great for elastin and collagen production. Do you have any experience with them? Thoughts?

    Thanks again

  • Thanks. There are a few facial exercises that I use to keep my moneymaker lookin’ young, but I definitely wouldn’t say I know too much about the whole thing. I’d definitely be interested in learning more!
