I am one of those women who has been cursed with dark circles under her eyes since, oh, well, I was a child. Honestly.
I literally do not remember not having dark pigmentation under my eyes. Lucky me.
In fact, I started using concealer at the age of 11 because I was so self-conscious about those damn dark circles. Yes. 11 years old. I kid you not.
As I got older my tolerance for my dark under eye circles and puffiness diminished until I finally hit my 20’s and decided to take action.
I tried home remedies, I considered Restylane injections and finally settled on testing out different under eye creams.
Now I know I’m not alone in this battle and I know there are countless other women out there who, like me, want to look as good on the outside as they feel on the inside.
With that being said, I have chosen to compare my top 3 choices for the best under eye creams available today.
After all, why settle for looking like a second-rate you? You deserve better. Much better.
So let’s get into it…
What Causes Dark Under Eye Circles?
While they are wildly annoying to have, it is slightly reassuring to know there is a reason WHY we get under eye circles or discoloration and it’s not that we are just cursed.
Simply put, the area around our eyes is full of itsy bitsy capillaries, or blood vessels. For many of us, especially those of us who suffer from discoloration, circles and puffiness, these capillaries are extremely fragile and can rupture easily.
And when they rupture blood spills out of these capillaries and into our eye socket area, close to our skin’s surface, similar to how bruising occurs.
Since the skin around our eye area is the thinnest on our whole face, this discoloration shows up more noticeably than it would anywhere else on our body, hence giving us that tired, sickly look we loathe.
Under eye puffiness however, can be the result of allergies, hormones, a sodium-laden diet, regular alcohol intake, as well as a build up of fluid.
Even factors such as going to bed with makeup on, rubbing your eyes too much or not drinking enough water can inflame the area around your eyes, causing under eye bags.
Speaking of inadvertently causing your eyes damage, not only will actions such as sleeping with your makeup on or rubbing your eyes cause that area to puff up, but it will also speed up the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
I mean, in case we didn’t have enough under-eye drama on our hands…errr….face, now we have to deal with signs of aging?
It just doesn’t seem fair.
Luckily, there are ways you can the reverse damage, rejuvenate your under-eye area and help shed a few years off your face in the process!
Why Do I Need an Under Eye Treatment?
That’s more of a redundant question since those of us who suffer with under eye circles, puffiness, discoloration and wrinkles know that sometimes natural treatments simply fall short.
If you are fed up with concealing your problem areas and dealing with always looking tired, then you need to find yourself a brilliant product that works to rectify each and every under eye issue you have.
But what should you be looking for in an under eye cream?
The 5 Factors You Should Be Looking for in an Under Eye Cream
If there is one thing you want your under eye creams to do, it is to reduce the annoying puffiness that can form around your eye area.
No easy feat but any under eye cream worth it’s weight should be able to do this within a few weeks.
To me, this is the most important aspect of a solid under eye cream, but that is because I have horrendous dark circles under my eyes!
Again, any solid under eye cream you choose should be able to lighten the area under your eyes. The most reputable creams can actually do this almost right away.
There is no point in choosing an under eye cream that is going to reduce puffiness and lighten your discoloration if it is going to dry out your skin.
Because fine lines and wrinkles first form around our eyes, if our skin is dried out thanks to a lacklustre product then those lines and wrinkles are only going to become more pronounced – causing you to look even older.
Not exactly the look we are going for, is it?
It goes without saying that if you are choosing to invest in a product you believe will work for your specific under eye ailments, you want to see results!
We all do.
However, it is important to manage your expectations. If you can stay consistent in your daily use, you should be able to see the first signs of noticeable results in as little as 2-4 weeks.
We all want to find a good price, and usually we think the cheaper the better. But when it comes to finding yourself a solid under eye cream, you don’t always want to skimp on price.
Sure it is nice to save a few dollars here and there, but if you truly want results then you have to be willing to invest in your skin. I’m not saying thousands or even hundreds, but you should be aware that you often get what you pay for.
So while opting for the cheaper cream is usually easier on our wallets, it may not give you the results you crave. Alternatively, if you spend a bit more you could notice the puffiness, discoloration and wrinkles subsiding quicker than expected.
Ultimately it comes down to your preference and your budget, but I urge you to keep an open mind and focus on the results you wish to achieve.
With all of that being said, it is with these 5 factors in mind we here in BES land have chosen our top 3 favourite under eye creams for 2013.
#1: Elite Serum
|Price:||$89.95 or $59.95/2 months|
Elite Serum – the under eye serum that is touted as an at-home form of eye Botox in a tube thanks to its not-so-secret secret ingredient, Argireline (the brand name for Acetyl Hexapeptide-3).
This fiesty little ingredient is known for its immediate effect on muscles. Essentially it forces the muscle to contract the same way it would if Botox had been injected. The only difference being the time taken to see a full contraction.
That’s all well and good but how does Elite Serum stand up to our 5 factor test?
One of the ingredients found in Elite Serum is called Eyeliss. It is an ingredient that is created by combining three active peptide molecules.
These molecules are designed to strengthen capillaries as well as quickly and efficiently reduce puffiness and the look of bags under your eyes by just over 70% once applied.
Not only that but they work to decrease the capillary permeability of the delicate skin surrounding our lower eyelid area.
It also helps to prime the skin for proper lymphatic circulation and drainage, meaning you should no longer be saddled with the look of fluid-filled under eye bags and any puffiness should decrease within a few weeks of usage.
The ability to lighten my dark circles is essential when I’m looking for suitable under eye creams.
I personally like Elite Serum because it contains the ingredient Haloxyl (or Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7) which fades the look of dark circles and lightens the area under your eyes naturally.
It accomplishes this by reducing fluid leakage, discoloration and encouraging proper circulation in that specific area to dilute any future buildup.
In fact, a recent study by SeDerma found that this one little ingredient worked to reduce the look of dark circles under eyes by 600%. Yowza!
It is imperative when choosing an under eye cream that you look for one that not only combats the puffiness and dark circles, but also hydrates your eye area and fights the signs of aging, which can worsen if your skin is dry and therefore prone to dermal tearing.
Elite Serum uses both red and green seaweed extract to infuse moisture deep into your skin while also preserving your skin’s natural collagen levels.
On top of that, it also uses the ingredient Matrixyl 3000 for its wrinkle reducing properties. This one little ingredient actually works to trick your body into producing more collagen – a necessary ingredient in the production of new skin cells.
I liked Elite, it seriously reduced the dark discoloration I had under my eyes and seemed to waken up my whole eye area.
However, it took about 5 weeks before I noticed any real improvements but once I did, I was hooked. I know 5 weeks can seem like a lifetime when trying out a new product and hoping for certain results but since I have had dark circles pretty much all my life, 5 weeks was nothin’.
I didn’t notice too much of a “Botox” feeling but then again when I think Botox I think “wrinkles gone”! Maybe I expected too much. I did notice a slight improvement but I also don’t have deep set wrinkles around my eyes…yet.
Alright, if I’m being honest, Elite Serum is a little pricey. My only justification for spending the money is the fact that it works.
But I will say this, if you are thinking of spending the money do yourself a favor and order in bulk. Elite is cheapest when you buy more than one tube, meaning don’t pay $90 a tube if you don’t have to.
Here’s their price breakdown:
1 unit: $89.95
2-3 units: $67 each unit (you save 25%)
4-6 units: $62 each unit (you save 30%)
7-8 units: $58 each unit (you save 35%)
See what I mean? Why pay $90 per unit if you could buy one more and slash $22.95 of the price? I mean that deal is just beggin’ for you to take advantage of it!
Just be sure you really want to buy Elite Serum before making your order as I have not been able to find a refund policy for them anywhere.
#2: Obagi ELASTIderm
I have to say, finally there is a brand that shakes things up a little, embraces their individuality and differentiates themselves from the rest of the eye creams on the market by creating a product that doesn’t use the same old ingredients.
By utilizing a revolutionary mix of bi-mineral complex and copper zinc malonate this cream helps to restore your skin’s elasticity.
But does it meet our 5 factors?
I hate to kick things off on a bad note but unfortunately ELASTIderm does not work to reduce puffiness.
Even though the cream is chocked full of useful ingredients, not one of these really helps to calm down any swelling or inflammation.
Well this is just getting awkward now as ELASTIderm also doesn’t have that great of an effect on dark circles…or any effect at all.
Since their main focus is to create an eye cream that restores elasticity and promotes collagen production, you will see the majority of your results coming from a noticeable decrease in the lines and wrinkles around your eyes.
But if you’re looking to get rid of dark circle (or puffiness for that matter) then this is not a cream you want to invest in.
Finally! I get to say something positive! Sort of.
As I mentioned above, ELASTIderm is one of those creams that can help to eliminate the look of lines and wrinkles around your eyes. It does this by not only deeply hydrating the delicate skin around your eye area but through the use of ingredients such as Blueberry Extract and Malonic Acid.
Both of these ingredients work to protect your fragile skin cells and encourage new growth, meaning your eye area will look rejuvenated, refreshed and much younger than before you used the cream.
However, it has been reported by many users with sensitive skin that ELASTIderm only irritated their skin, causing them to abandon this cream after only a few weeks.
That means if you have the type of skin that can have an adverse reaction to certain products, you may want to give this one a pass.
Although if you do opt to give ELASTIderm a shot, just be sure you buy the eye cream and not the gel as the gel can have even more drying effects than the cream.
While this cream doesn’t work on puffiness or dark circles, if your main concern is lines and wrinkles around your eyes, causing them to look aged then ELASTIderm could be the answer for you – assuming you don’t have sensitive skin.
Customers who used it for anti-aging around their eye area have reported great results where lines and wrinkles are concerned, even saying their eye area looks lifted. Some women have even said it works so well they use it on their neck to get rid of their sagging skin.
Quite a versatile cream…well…kind of.
Similar to Vivexin, ELASTIderm is nearly half the price of Elite Serum. Therefore if you are interested in testing out a cream that can wipe those wrinkles clear off your face, ELASTIderm may be your answer.
Coming in at just under $52 for a jar on Amazon, this cream also offers free shipping if you buy from the right vendor. Add to that Amazon’s no questions asked refund policy and you have yourself a pretty safe bet…assuming you aren’t trying to get rid of dark circles and puffiness.
If there’s one thing we ladies love, it’s options. Fortunately Elite Serum isn’t the only cream that works to fade those nasty dark circles and de-puff the puff!
Vivexin is a top contender in the eye cream industry so where does it measure up in our 5 factor test?
Similar to Elite Serum, Vivexin features the ingredient Eyeliss, the key ingredient which works to eliminate under eye puffiness and swelling.
It does this by strengthening your fragile capillaries which are located under the eye and can leak fluid, causing the discoloration under your eyes.
Additionally Eyliss works to promote the drainage of said fluid, helping to naturally decrease any inflammation giving your eyes a more alert look.
As I previously mentioned, getting rid of my dark circles is priority #1 for me. I just despise the look of them.
Vivexin works to gradually fade the appearance of dark circles by incorporating Haloxyl, which again, you may recognize from Elite Serum.
This one component fortifies the capillaries around your eye to reduce leakage of blood into your eye area. It also harnesses the power of natural enzymes to break down any existing discoloration which can cause your eyes to appear lighter.
Because our eye area is so sensitive it is crucial to choose a cream that doesn’t dry out your delicate skin.
Unfortunately, this is where Vivexin drops the ball.
While it contains various ingredients to cure the discoloration and shrink any swelling, it doesn’t contain many hydrating compounds.
In fact, there has been a growing amount of customers complaining about how Vivexin dried out the area around their eyes so much they were forced to give it up.
And I don’t blame them. You see, when your skin is dehydrated it becomes more prone to micro rips and tears. While they may not sound like a big deal, those mini tears in your skin are what form deep-set wrinkles years later.
If you want to avoid this, keeping your skin hydrated is essential. Otherwise you could wind up looking older than you are, sooner than you expect.
However, if you think Vivexin is the product for you, all you have to do is use a solid natural moisturizer (I love Coconut Oil) as an additional source of moisture and you should be fine.
If reducing the dark circles and puffiness under your eyes is a big priority to you, and hydration is not, then Vivexin could be a solid choice for you.
My only concern is how drying the cream is. Since you don’t want to further agitate your eye area, and make yourself look older, Vivexin isn’t my number one choice. Obviously.
Also, this serum doesn’t include any Botox-like effects meaning it may not give your eyes a lifted look – a side effect many women look for in a solid eye cream.
As always the choice is up to you, but if results are a big deal to you then I would reconsider Vivexin.
Because I don’t want to completely rag on Vivexin there are some advantages to ordering this product. For starters, it much cheaper than Elite Serum.
Since it is available on Amazon, you can save nearly half the price on ordering a month’s supply. As I mentioned above, Elite Serum costs $89.95 for one unit. Vivexin on the other hand costs only $49.99 for a one month’s supply.
While Vivexin doesn’t offer a discount if you buy more than one unit, it is cheaper overall. And Amazon’s refund policy should help to ease any hesitations you may have when trying to decide whether or not you should buy Vivexin.
One Final Note
No matter which of the eye creams you choose to buy, if you can stay committed and diligent in your application you should be able to notice results in under 6 weeks.
After all, why make the investment and spend the money on an eye cream if you don’t plan to stick to your new eye care routine. The real results will come in time, you just need to be patient.
And I just want to leave you with this: no longer do you need to feel self-conscious or timid about the way you look simply because of your dark circles or puffiness or wrinkles (or all three!). There is new technology coming out for under eye treatments and creams all the time and you will find one that works for you. You just need to stay committed.
So choose which cream you want to kick off the new you with. I personally prefer Elite Serum, but only you can make that decision. I have faith you will make the right one.
