how to make your own diy body butter

I’ve gotta admit, I’m jealous of every single one of you readers who lives in a year-round warm, sunny spot in the world because currently I’m looking out my window and all I see is dark, bleak, cold, grey misery.

And every year when this weather rolls around, I brace myself for the dry, itchy skin that is sure to find it’s way onto my body and annoy me for 5 straight months.

It seems no matter what I do, I just can’t seem to keep my skin moisturized enough to ward off that dry, itchy skin. So this year I have a plan, because this year I’m keeping it au naturale.

Oh yeah baby, I’m going to take matters into my own hands and make my own hydrating body butter! You see, no matter what brand of store-bought moisturizer I use, whether it be for normal skin, dry skin, or extra-dry skin my body just doesn’t seem to respond.

So I’m taking it as a sign to embrace my inner DIY diva and stir up my own DIY body butter! Want the recipe? Read on.

Why DIY Body Butter is Better

Contrary to store-bought moisturizers, when you make your own skincare and beauty treatments, you control every single ingredient that goes onto your skin.

This is important for those who choose to lead a more natural lifestyle because as we all know, our skin is our largest organ meaning that whatever we slather and lather onto our skin eventually makes its way into our blood stream.

If this doesn’t bother you, ignore me. But if you prefer to keep those chemicals out of your body then making your own skincare and beauty treatments may be one of the quickest way to do that.

Since Winter is coming straight for us, I figured what better way to keep your skin smooth and soothed than to make your own DIY body butter!

How To Make DIY Body Butter

As you can tell in our DIY section, I looooove me a good DIY trick! And what makes me love this handy little recipe so much is how freakin’ easy it is!

All you need is:the recipe for quick and easy diy body butter

  • 1 cup Coconut Oil – I like this one
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E Oil (optional but great for hydrating your skin!) – I use straight oil but you can also use capsules
  • a few drops of your favourite essential oil (again, optional but adds a nice boost of fragrance)

Once you have all your ingredients together, simply:

  • pour your ingredients into a mixing bowl
  • use an automatic mixer or a hand-held mixer (you could try a food processor but I haven’t used one for this)
  • mix on high for at least 5 minutes or until you notice your mixture looking quite creamy and whipped
  • scoop your whipped body butter into a clean glass jar with a tight lid
  • keep at room temperature or store in your refrigerator

Note that in the ingredients list there is only ONE ingredient that is actually required to make this bangin’ body butter, the other two are optional. That means you could whip up your own quick and easy DIY body butter with only ONE ingredient! I mean, does DIY’ing get any better than that?!

The answer, my friends, is no.

Thanks to this effortless DIY I plan to be smooth, soft, and hydrated all Winter…and who knows, maybe next week I’ll teach you how to make a DIY body scrub. Psssst, that’s a hint for you to come back next Tuesday. *wink*

But before you click off and go do yo’ thang, I want to hear from you!  Surely this isn’t the only DIY body butter recipe floating around cyberland so tell me, what’s your go-to recipe to repair winter-ravaged skin? Share your recipe in the comment section below!

  • Hello!
This did not work out. Did you melt the coconut oil?

  • Do you mean the lotion didn’t come together for you?

  • Coconut oil drys my skin Right Out!
Have heard others say the same. But, hey! that’s why we DIY! To make what works for us.
Got one with shea butter or other oils instead?

  • I would swap out Coconut Oil for Jojoba or shea and keep the same amounts. Might be a slightly different consistency, but if Coconut dries you out, jojoba should do the trick!
