Our skin is pretty resilient. It provides a layer of armour between all the toxins and environmental layers.

But after decades of living a full and exciting life, it can begin to show a little wear and tear. For me that means puffy eyes and dark circles.

As we sail into our 40’s and beyond, our skin and body begins to undergo some massive transformations. For starters, the evidence of fine lines, wrinkles and age spots begin to emerge.

Our hormones start shifting and this can cause a change in our collagen and elastin synthesis, not to mention our natural oil (sebum) production. Simply put, our skin’s ability to repair itself diminishes and we start to see the effects.

Dark under eye circles may become more prominent as we age because we start to lose subcutaneous fat and our facial muscles slacken. This allows fluids from around your skin to seap into your lower eye region causing that unflattering puffy and dark appearance.

The key to avoiding dark under eye circles is in the prevention. We all know that food and sleep play a major role in the quality of our skin.

Ensuring you catch a minimum of 7-9 hours of sleep nightly can give your body the time it needs (and deserves) to repair and renew damaged skin cells.

It goes without saying that a crucial aspect of this involves eating healthy foods too. Whole foods contain the essential minerals and nutrients our bodies need to stay strong and healthy. Dark leafy greens, clean proteins and essential fatty acids all contain the fuel our skin needs to look younger.

Unfortunately, there are certain contributing factors like genetics and allergies that cause dark under eye circles too and are a little harder to prevent. So if you can’t totally prevent a bad eye day, how can you fix it?

Banish Dark Eye Circles with a Simple Coffee Mask

Eye masks and facials are one of my go-to skin care DIY’s for almost every skin care situation. From treating random acne breakouts to evening my skin tone I’ve got a DIY recipe for just about everything.

When it comes to puffy, under eye circles I rely on this coffee mask though.

Gather together the following ingredients:

1 tablespoon caffeinated coffee grounds (used or fresh)
1 capsule vitamin E oil or 5 drops if jarred
1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
1 teaspoon local, raw honey
3 drops chamomile essential oil

Step One

Combine all of your ingredients together in a bowl. Really mix it up so all the oils blend together nicely.
Step Two

It’s important to clean your face before starting this process. You want a fresh canvas so use a mild cleanser and wash away any makeup or dirt from your face.
Step Three

Using clean hands, slather this simple coffee mask all over your face. Using very gentle circular motions, massage it into your skin and carefully apply it under your eyes. Be careful not to get any in your eye. Should this happen, rinse it out immediately with cool water.
Step Four

Whether you’re in a rush or have some time to kill, you will notice results in as little as 5 minutes. For best results, leave this mask on for 15-20 minutes.
Step Five

Once your coffee mask has gotten a full soak wash it off. The warmer the water, the easier it will be to wash off the honey, but make sure it’s not too hot to touch or you could cause more damage to your skin. Finish by applying your favourite moisturizer or eye cream.

Why This Coffee Eye Mask Works

This mask is effective at reducing dark eye circles for so many reasons. For starters, coffee contains caffeine, which naturally stimulates your blood flow allowing nutrient rich blood to make its way to your face.

With ingredients like coconut oil and vitamin E you will be giving your dark circles a desperately needed hit of moisture, while the honey works to lock it in thanks to its humectant properties.

Fun fact: when you consume raw, local honey regularly you can reduce allergy-induced dark eye circles. Studies have found that because honey contains local pollen that causes allergic reactions, by consuming it regularly you reduce your body’s sensitivity to them.

Finally, chamomile oil contains soothing anti inflammatory properties which reduce puffiness caused by fluid retention.

So go ahead and give this simple DIY a try. You’re going to love how bright it makes your eyes look in just a few quick minutes!
