The many beer bath benefits for beauty

I’m sorry G-free’ers, this post is not for you.

This week I’m talking about gluten-infested, barley rich, wheat-infused beer! I’m sure most of you picture an icy cold pint that feels oh, so good on a hot summers day. I bet you never considered using beer to benefit your skin.

Benefits of Beer

Over the past few years, studies have begun to show the beautifying benefits of beer. Most beers are made from ingredients that are rich with selenium, iron, magnesium, zinc and vitamins B1 and B3.

Beer is also known to have antibacterial properties that protect against infections within your stomach. If it’s so good for your insides, surely it can be just as good for your outside.

Back in the day ancient Romans used beer baths to sweat out toxins, exfoliate their skin and infuse the body with vitamins. All of this led to clearer skin and and an improved immune system.

Thousands of years later, it seems like these ancient Romans were onto something. It turns out that brewer’s yeast helps slow down sebum production and therefore reduce potential acne breakouts.

It also helps kill the bacteria that causes acne. Inactive yeast on the other hand, helps maintain your skin’s pH balance. Who knew!

Beautify with Beer

Beer Spas are pretty popular in Europe, but for us North Americans, they are practically unheard of. What these spas boast is beer-inspired baths, facials, body wraps and massages.

The concept of a beer spa isn’t just pouring bottles of brew in a tub and settling in. No, no, there’s much more to it than that.

Active beer yeast, hops and a combination of dehydrated herbs are added to a blend of beer and mineral water and set at 93 degrees fahrenheit. Each spa will have their own signature additive, but this is the basic formula.

To really get the beer bath benefits, you soak in it for 20-30 minutes then cocoon your body in warm sheets. This gives your body time to soak it all in and detoxify. And let’s be honest, cocooning yourself in warm sheets just sounds comfy as hell.

Brew Your Own Bath At Home

You can absolutely get the beer bath benefits from the comfort of your home. If you couldn’t, I’m sure I wouldn’t be writing about it!

Since spending all your money on cases of beer to fill your bathtub wouldn’t be cost effective, why not try this simple body scrub? It incorporates all of the beneficial aspects of a beer bath without blowing your bank account.

Here’s what you need:

  • some of your favourite beer; you’ll only need 1/4 cup so you can drink the rest!
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive or coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons almond extract
  • 3 egg whites

Step 1: Combine all your ingredients in a bowl and whip together until it’s all smooth and set aside.

Step 2: Soak in a warm bath. Make sure the water is not too hot or this will only irritate your skin. Soak for 15 mins to open up your pores. Feel free to add 1 cup of epsom salt to give your body a pre-beer scrub detox.

Step 3: Once you’re done with the bath, empty the tub and start rubbing your body down with your beer scrub. Let it soak into your skin for 10 minutes before rinsing off.

Step 4: Complete this home brewed bath by splashing your body with cold water.

You will be thoroughly surprised by how smooth and supple your skin feels afterwards. Give it a try and let me know what you think in the comment section below.
