3 Natural Remedies for Stretch Marks

natural remedies for stretch marksOh stretch marks. Yet another wonderful gift from God that women seem to have to deal with a helluva lot more than our dude counterparts.

Seriously, why are we so cursed?

Ranting aside, there’s a few things we can do about it. Rather than wallow in our woes, let’s take control and show these stretch marks who is really in control.

What Are Stretch Marks

There’s no doubt in my mind that you know what a stretch mark is. It’s hard to miss those horrid streaks caused from overstretched skin.

Stretch marks often begin as flat red lines. Over time, they depress into white linear streaks. Most of us experience them in 5 common areas; armpits, boobs, belly, thighs and groin.

The cause of stretch marks depends on a few things, but the science of how it happens remains the same.

Stretch marks result from damage caused to the elastin fibres of your dermis (your deep skin) and accompanying inflammation. This usually has something to do with excessive stretching of the skin. Think rapid breast growth, weight gain or pregnancy.

While stretch marks may not look the nicest, they don’t cause any actual harm to your being; just the ego!

Natural Remedies for Stretch Marks

Like I said earlier, there aren’t many situations where we can control whether or not we get a stretch mark. Obviously having a stern conversation with your bust line during puberty won’t stop your breasts from expanding and leaving you with a new mark.

What you can do, is reduce the appearance of the ones you already have. There are a few wacky home remedies for stretch marks and some really great essential oils for prevention as well.

Today, I’m sharing a few more of my favourite natural remedies for stretch marks; 3 to be exact.

Egg Whites

Did you know that egg whites are good for more than making omelets and blackhead nose strips?

Turns out, the amino acids and protein found in egg whites can help heal  your skin from those gnarly stretch marks. To whip up this natural remedy, you will have to:

  • Whip up 2 egg whites in a bowl. Do so until they are nice and frothy.
  • Apply the whipped egg white all over your stretch mark. You can use a sponge or makeup brush; whatever you have handy.
  • Let the egg white dry completely then rinse off with cool water.
  • Apply a little olive oil over your area for added moisture.

If you can whip up this simple concoction daily, you’ll be laughing!

Wheat Germ Oil

Wheat germ oil is great for using on budding stretch marks. This oil stimulates cell regeneration and gives your skin and essential dose of antioxidants, which can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks as they form. To use:

  • Apply several dabs of wheat germ oil to a cotton ball and apply to your stretch mark. Let it dry.
  • Repeat 2-3 times daily.

This is one of the quickest natural remedies for stretch marks in my personal arsenal. Apply after your shower and you won’t even think twice about waiting for the oil to soak in.

Vitamin C

Awww good ole’ Vit C. She’s good for clearing your skin, staving off colds and preventing scurvy. It can also be used in a cream to remedy your stretch marks. You will need to:

  • Mix together 1/2 teaspoon L-ascorbic acid with 1/4 cup your favourite moisturizer.
  • Keep your mixture out of sunlight and store in a dark container.
  • Apply to your stretch marks twice daily and don’t use longer than 3-4 weeks before making a new batch.

L-ascorbic acid is a stable form of vitamin C that will not only lighten the appearance of your scar, but rejuvenate the damaged skin.

With one of these 3 natural remedies for stretch marks added to your daily routine, you’ll have no problem getting rid of those nasty marks in no time at all.

  • Thank God, I don’t have any stretch marks!
Even though I got pregnant 3 times, including having a twin in my second pregnancy, I used to apply rich creams on my belly on a daily basis from the fourth month till I give birth. I honestly don’t remember the brands I was using, but I remember that one main ingredient was cocoa butter.
    I guess I am very lucky :)

  • Wow! How lucky are you. Cocoa butter is great for keeping stretching skin moisturized, so you clearly made the right choice in products 😉
